Frost that comes and goes with defrost is ordinary. A cabinet locked in ice means defrost isn't finishing, and the technician checks the defrost control and its sensor first, then charge, then whether anything is blocking air across the coil. Placement is a real factor where snow drifts deep and gets pushed around by wind, so a unit sitting close to grade or under a dripping eave collects far more ice than the same unit set higher on a stand. Sustained cold also pushes any heat pump toward its limits, so how quickly ice returns after a defrost matters as much as the ice itself. Prying or hammering at the coil bends fins and shortens the unit's life.
