What a pro does

Which rooms are cold is the most useful clue anyone can hand a technician. A pattern that follows one branch of pipe points at trapped air or a stuck valve on that loop, while cold rooms scattered across floors more often means the circulator is struggling or the system is out of balance. Air is the usual answer on hot-water systems, and bleeding it out in the right sequence is what actually clears a loop that's blocked rather than moving the pocket somewhere new. Older buildings that grew room by room end up with loops nobody ever balanced properly. On steam, a plugged vent starves the radiator no matter how well the boiler is running.

Frequently asked questions

Air rises to the highest point in the loop and sits there, blocking hot water from filling the upper passages. Bleeding that air out restores the whole surface.
It's the single most useful thing to report. Cold rooms grouped on one loop suggest a local blockage, while cold rooms spread around suggest circulation or balancing.
Sometimes, if the stem has only seized from disuse. A valve that's been closed for years and now weeps around the packing usually needs replacing instead.
It can be. Water hammer puts shock loads on joints and hangers, and on a steam system it usually means pipe pitch or drainage has shifted and needs correcting.
